Be A REPRESENTATIVE
To function effectively in representing all graduate students of the University of Texas at Austin, the Graduate Student Assembly requires representation from all departments. The GSA constitution states that all the graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin shall be represented in the Graduate Student Assembly though the following members:
- Departmental Representatives. Each department should elect one graduate student to represent the students of each field of study.
- Alternate Representatives. Each department should elect one graduate student to serve as an alternate representative for the students of their field of study
These representatives from the departments together with GSA executive and committee members form the assembly.
The departmental and alternative representatives elected to serve in the Graduate Student Assembly have the following responsibilities:
- Attend regular and special meetings of the Assembly;
- Report on meetings in a timely fashion to your department, program, or center and solicit feedback;
- Represent the interests of all graduate students-not personal interests-while serving as a representative of a department, program, or center;
- Avoid any conflicts of interest between your employment and your representation of graduate students;
- Make a diligent effort to replace your position if you can no longer fulfill the GSA responsibilities and duties;
- Be readily accessible and available to other members of the Graduate Student Assembly and to graduate students so that you are knowledgeable about their interests;
- Participate in and encourage participation by graduate students of your department, program, or center in GSA functions, events, committees, and meetings.
All graduate students are eligible to serve their departments and programs as representatives or alternative representatives. Check to see if your departments currently has a representative.
For more information on becoming a representative or alternative representative, contact your graduate coordinator or the Administrative Director, Paul Michels via e-mail paul@mail.utexas.edu
